The German tennis player explained what the advantage the Spanish and Italian had compared to his generation
Alexander Zverev explained what is the great difference between his generation and that of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. The German champion, at the press conference after reaching the quarter-finals at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, focused on the period in which he was a NextGen, explaining what the great advantage of Alcaraz and Sinner was compared to his generation.
“All the big names will be there in Paris, I come from three consecutive semi-finals, one of which ended in hospital.
I want to win it and I want to give myself an opportunity to do it, me, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev are great tennis players. The big difference between us and this new younger generation is that in the early years we faced Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the greatest challenge for a tennis player. And in some cases we even managed to beat them, I beat Djokovic at the Olympics while Medvedev beat Nole in a Slam final,” he explained.
Zverev then claims his value and that of his generation, also sending a small dig at the generation of Alcaraz and Sinner. The German is now one of the biggest favorites now to win the final at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome. The German tennis player has reached the quarter-finals and is now – together with Stefanos Tsitsipas – the big favorite for success.
At the press conference, in addition to the differences between him, Medvedev and Tsitsipas and the new NextGen, Zverev talked about many other topics such as problems in the schedule.
“I’m finding my rhythm again and I’m happy to have reached the quarter-finals but I’m taking advantage of this period to work on my game. I want to play differently and try to win Paris, this is my main objective, this is what I hope to do and I know I have to change something. There are still interesting tennis players in the tournament, Fritz has grown a lot on clay and then there is Tsitsipas who won Monte-Carlo and has always played well on this surface. My game? In 2022 before the injury I had a great chance of winning, I dominated from the baseline and I could do it, now I often wait for mistakes from my opponent, but I know and have to do better. I also had good feelings in Australia but I wasn’t up to par,” he analysed.
