Djokovic’s wife Jelena definitely didn’t have an easy time following the Cerundolo match.
Jelena Djokovic perfectly understood what every Novak Djokovic fan was going through on Monday as the Serbian tennis star’s wife funnily remarked they must figure out a way how to watch these dramatic matches without suffering a heart attack.
On Monday, Djokovic was grinding and fighting on the court for just over four hours and 30 minutes before sealing a 6-1 5-7 3-6 7-5 6-3 over No. 23 seed Francisco Cerundolo. During the match, Djokovic battled a right knee issue and he was on the verge of losing in four sets before coming back from a break down in the fourth set and ultimately completing a big comeback win.
But this was not the first thriller that Djokovic endured at this year’s French Open as just a match earlier, Djokovic outlasted Lorenzo Musetti in a five-set thriller that finished at 03:08 AM local time.
And during Djokovic’s thriller versus Cerundolo, Djokovic fans reached out to his wife, who wrote: “We gotta figure out how to watch this drama without a heart attack guys…”
Djokovic gave credit to the crowd
After surviving the Cerundolo challenge, Djokovic had something he wanted to tell the crowd.
“Again a big, big, big thank you because once again like the last match, the win is your win,” Djokovic told the crowd in his on-court interview.
Later, Djokovic confirmed that he was dealing with knee pain and discomfort since sustaining the injury early in the second set.
“I started feeling the pain [in set two] and asked for the physio treatment and the medical timeout and tried to take care of it. t did disrupt me definitely in play. For two sets, two sets and a half, I didn’t want to stay in the rally too long. Every time he would make sudden drop shots or change directions, I would not be feeling comfortable to do the running,” Djokovic shared after the match.
“At one point I didn’t know, to be honest, whether I should continue or not with what’s happening.”
Unfortunately for Djokovic, he withdrew from his Casper Ruud quarterfinal match due to a right knee issue
